1542 First European Discovers California

The first recorded instance of a European discovering California occurred on this day, when Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed into what is known today as San Diego.

He sailed into present day Point Loma Head which has since been memorialized as the Cabrillo National Monument.
