Yom Kippur War Begins | Egypt
and Syria launch a coordinated attack on Israel during the holiest day of the
Jewish calendar, in an attempt to reverse earlier military losses. It
seems that the Israeli Defense Forces were taken by surprise.
Following the Six Day War (in 1967), Israel found itself in control of: - The
23,500-square-mile Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip previously owned by Egypt.
-
The West Bank and East Jerusalem, formerly owned by Jordan
- Parts
of The Golan Heights, formerly owned by Syria.
The
Israelis were mobilized within days and began beating the attack back. A ceasefire
was secured between Egypt and Israel in October, which left Syria open to an Israeli
attack and they lost even more of the Golan Heights. |
