1901 First Niagara Falls Barrel Stunt

It was performed by Annie Edson Taylor who went over the side of Niagara's 175-foot-tall Horseshoe Falls (on the Canadian side) on this day.

She did it in a barrel 5 feet high and 3 feet in diameter. The barrel was filled with cushioned and she wore a leather harness.

Taylor failed to cash in on the stunt and died in poverty 20 years later.

1945 United Nations is Inaugurated

The Charter that established the United Nations was ratified today by the five members of the Security Council (Great Britain, the United States, the USSR, France, and China) in a short ceremony in Washington DC.

The United Nations would replace the League of Nations. It was established less than 2 months following the end of the second world war.
