He
was Richard Nixon's VP, Nixon resigned a year later. Agnew
was the first Vice President to ever resign in disgrace. He was convicted of federal
tax evasion, an apparent trade-off which meant that charges of political corruption
were not brought. He
received a $10,000 fine and 3 years probation. Agnew
was replaced as VP by Gerald Ford. The process is that the president must nominate
a candidate, which must then be approved by Congress. As
history would have it, Ford would become president a year later when President
Richard Nixon resigns over Watergate. |
