2002 Riots In Nigeria, Miss World Pageant Moved To London

Muslim youths rioted, leaving 100 dead and 500 injured in the city of Kaduna.

The Miss World event was scheduled to be held at the Nigerian capital, Abuja, in December.

One of the main problems seems to be that the pageant was to be held during the holy month of Ramadan.

Riots were then sparked when a writer in the Nigerian newspaper ThisDay made blasphemous comments linking the Prophet Mohammed to the pageant.

Earlier in the year, in Nigeria, a 31 year old woman was sentenced to be stoned to death after she had a child out of wedlock after she had been raped.
