First Untethered Hot Air Balloon Flight, Over Paris | In
the balloon were French physician Jean-François Pilatre de Rozier and François
Laurent, the marquis d' Arlandes. It
took them 25 minutes to fly 5.5 miles. The balloon was made out of cloth by Jacques-Étienne
and Joseph-Michel Montgolfier. It
is not clear whether this was the first time humans had ever flown. That honor
may have been won by a German architect Karl Friedrich Meerwein in 1781, who,
it is said, flew his "ornithopter", a glider with flapping wings. |
