Georges Besse was murdered outside his house by a man and a woman on a motorcycle. He died of multiple shots to his head and chest. Authorities believed the murder was carried out by anti-capitalist group Action Directe.

Although Besse had taken the French car company into profitability in September, his methods had infuriated the trade unison; he had laid off 21,000 workers in his first 18 months at the head of the company.
