On The 11th Hour, of the 11th Day, of the 11th Month, World War One Ends | 9
million soldiers had died, 21 million had been wounded. It
is thought that 5 million civilians also died as a direct result of the war. Germany
had surrendered at 5am on this day, fearing an imminent invasion. The armistice
was signed in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. World
War 1 officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, of 1919.
This treaty forced punitive damages on Germany which would, in time, serve to
destabilize the country and ultimately lead on to the Second World War. |

South Dakota Dust Bowl Crisis, Great Depression | In
an event which exacerbated the Great Depression, dust storms paralyzed South Dakota.
The storms stripped the top soil off farmlands across the state. Over
time, 100 million acres were affected. Livestock choked, crops were destroyed
and human health was adversely affected. Many
historians say this was the worst natural disaster in American history. There
are two main reasons for the Dust Bowl Crisis: - A
prolonged drought (the rains would return in 1941, and the problems would disappear).
- The
techniques farmers used to replace the native grasses with wheat and other, weaker,
crops.
President
Roosvelt attacked the problem with education and aid programs, which taught farmers
soil conservation techniques which are in use today. |
