Sidney
Reso was abducted from his Morris Township, New Jersey, home on this day. He was
killed almost instantly, but his kidnappers carried through their ransom demands. The
main demand was for $18.5million in used $100 bills, and the notes were sometimes
signed 'Rainbow Warriors' an apparent link to the environmental group. However,
police collected DNA from the ransom notes and the public phones used to issue
their demands and a disaffected employee of Exxon, Arthur Seale was traced. Seale
had been a police officer, and also served as an Exxon security consultant but
he had been fired in 1987. The motivation for the crime, however, appears to have
been mainly greed - the couple had debts. Arthur
and his wife, Irene, were both arrested on June 19, 1992.
Irene was persuaded to testify against her husband, and led the authorities to
Reso's body. Arthur
was convicted and sentenced to 95 years in prison and fined $1.75 million. Irene
Seale received a 20-year sentence. |
