1963 Iconic Prison, Alcatraz, Closes

San Francisco's maximum security prison was also known as "The Rock", or "America's Devil Island".

It reached its maximum occupancy in the 1950's when it housed about 200 prisoners.

The prison, built on a rock and surrounded by the sea, was believed to be inescapable.

Alcatraz was the first prison to use metal detectors.
