Just before 9am on this day, Gianni Versace, the 50 year-old fashion designer and businessman, was returning to his home in Ocean Drive, Miami, after buying breakfast and Italian Newspapers from the fashionable 'News Cafe', when Andrew Cunanan, 27, took a gun from his backpack and shot him twice in the head.

Cunanan then hid the gun with clothing in an abandoned Chevrolet pick-up truck.

Tributes flooded in from his famous clientele in the world, including a message from Princess Diana, who said she was:
