Angelo
Buono, one of the Hillside Stranglers, is sentenced to life in prison without
the prospect of parole for his role in the rape, torture, and murder of 10 women
in Los Angeles. Buono's cousin and accomplice, Kenneth Bianchi, testified against
Buono to escape the death penalty. The
two started abducting women in 1977 who they thought would not be missed. They
picked their victims up in their van, took them back to Buono's home, raped them,
tortured them, strangled them and then left the body's on the Hillside, sometimes
near police stations. Following
the tenth murder in February 1978 the murders suddenly stopped. The two had fallen
out.
Bianchi moved to Washington. He was arrested after murdering two further women.
He initially attempted to claim that he had a split personality, but when that
failed he testified against Buono in an attempt to avoid the death penalty. Buono
died of a heart attack in 2002. |
