Cleveland
Elementary School, San Diego: After 20 minutes of shooting, Brenda Spencer,
16, has killed 2 men and wounded 9 children as they entered the school. She shoots
them from her home which was directly across from the school. Police surround
her home and she surrenders after 6 hours. When asked why she did it she says:
"I
just don't like Mondays. I did this because it's a way to cheer up the day. Nobody
likes Mondays." Spencer
was widely known as a drug abuser with a violent streak. Her father had given
her a .22 semiautomatic rifle and 500 rounds of ammunition as a Christmas gift
at the end of 1978. Spencer
told her school friends she was going to do something to 'get on TV'. She started
her attack by shooting the principal, Burton Wragg, and Michael Suchar. Spencer
told police: "I
just started shooting. That's it. I just did it for the fun of it."
Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) based his song 'I don't like Mondays' on this event.
Spencer
pled guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon. She is currently
serving a term of 25 years to life at the California Institution for Women in
Corona, California. |
