1940 Bob Hope Hosts The Oscar's Ceremony For The First Time

Bob Hope was to go on to host or co-host the ceremony 20 times.

On his first outing, Gone With The Wind swept the board winning 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Art Direction, Film Editing, and Actress categories.

Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an Oscar on this day (Supporting Actress), also in Gone With the Wind. She won it for her role as Mammy a housemaid and former slave.

1996 Joan Collins Wins Her Lawsuit Against Random House

In 1990 Random House had offered Joan Collins $4mn for a two book deal. They paid $1.2mn advance with the rest on delivery of the manuscripts.

When Joan Collins delivered the first book to Random House, the publisher claimed that the work was 'unreadable.'

Joan Collins sued and won. Random House were told to pay $1mn for the work she turned in.

The novel was never published.
