Dolly, The First Mammal To Be Cloned, Is Revealed To The
World | Scientists
in Edinburgh, Scotland, announce to the world's press that they have cloned the
first mammal from an adult cell, a sheep, which they named Dolly. Dolly was actually
born on 5th July 1996 at the Roslin Institute. Earlier clonings had been successful
from embryo cells. DNA
tests confirm that Dolly is identical to the ewe who donated the udder cell and
is unrelated to the surrogate mother.
Embryologist Dr Ian Wilmut, from the Roslin Institute, heralded the controversial
development: "It
will enable us to study genetic diseases for which there is presently no cure
and track down the mechanisms that are involved." |

US Hockey Team Defeats 4 Time Champions USSR | Winter
Olympics, Lake Placid, New York, semifinal ice hockey: This remarkable 4-3 victory
was achieved by a young, underdog, US hockey team, with an average age of 22 years,
mostly college players. The Soviet team they beat was widely regarded as the best
in the world who had won gold in the four previous games, and who had not lost
a game in the Olympics since 1968. The
US team would take gold medals after defeating Finland 4-2 in the final. The
US victory was even more impressive as, in an exhibition game earlier in the year,
the Soviets had beaten them 10-3. The
game was to be nicknamed 'Miracle on Ice'. |
