Ted
Bundy, whilst working as the assistant director of the Crime Commission in Seattle,
became a serial killer on this day, by taking Lynda Ann Healy from her apartment
and then murdering her. Bundy was to become America's most famous serial killer
of his time. He was eventually (finally) caught and put on trial on 27th April
1979. In
the summer of 1974, Bundy attacked at least seven young women in the Washington
state area. He
was regarded as 'charming' and 'personable' by those who knew him. One of his
tricks at this time was to use a fake cast on his arm to appear less threatening. Bundy
moved to Utah to enroll in law school. Here the attacks started again. He was
to be caught in Colorado on 16th August 1975.
Bundy was charged with murder, but he managed to escape out of the window of the
local law library. He remained on the run for 8 days. He was caught again, put
into a cell, but escaped again on 30th December 1977. He
settled near Florida State University and began raping and killing more young
women. The attacks were now becoming even more vicious and included 12 year old
Kimberly Leach in Jacksonville. At
his trial, Bundy was to act as his own defense council, however the evidence against
him proved insurmountable (including teeth marks in one of his victims). He was
sentenced to death. He appealed the sentence for the next 10 years, becoming a
media sensation during this time as he confessed to 28 murders. He
was executed on January 24, 1989, at Florida State Prison. |
