Around two-thirds of the 55,000 volumes being stored in the Library of Congress, including a large part of Thomas Jefferson's personal library, were destroyed on this day.

The library had been established in 1800 by President John Adams to purchase:

"such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress."

It was rebuilt and restocked within a few years.
