The new settlers, who were at this time living on the Mayflower, at dock in Plymouth harbor (modern day Massachusetts), began work on the first settlement in the New World by European immigrants.

The aim was to build shelter to house the settlers from the oncoming winter.

Half of the colonists died in the first year.
