1944 Paris Liberated From Nazis

Paris had been under Nazi occupation for more than four years, but its liberation found only light Nazi resistance.

The commander of the German division, General Dietrich von Choltitz, defied an instruction from Hitler to flatten Paris before the liberation.

Today was the formal surrender, the next day General Charles de Gaulle led victory celebrations down the Champs d'Elysees.
