1498 Christopher Columbus Sets Foot In South America

The Italian explorer's first step was in what is present day Venezuela. Columbus thought he was on an island so he named it Isla Santa and claimed it for Spain (the Spanish monarchy was funding his expedition).

From this point he went on to explore the Orinoco River which made him realize that this was not an island but was, in fact, part of a new continent that he had found...

1971 The Sonny And Cher Comedy Hour Premieres

The married couple had already made a name for themselves as a pop duo with hits including "I Got You, Babe" in the 1960's.

The show proved to be a success and provided breaks for other acts, including Steve Martin who started his television career on this show.

Sonny and Cher divorced in 1974 and pursued separate careers. Cher became an A-List movie star and singer. Sonny became a politician.
