Italian explorer's first step was in what is present day Venezuela. Columbus thought
he was on an island so he named it Isla Santa and claimed it for Spain (the Spanish
monarchy was funding his expedition). From
this point he went on to explore the Orinoco River which made him realize that
this was not an island but was, in fact, part of a new continent that he had found... |
