1986 Clint Eastwood Becomes Mayor Of Carmel

Hollywood icon Eastwood, 55, managed to get 75% of the vote (2,166 vs 799) against his opponent, a librarian.

Eastwood then set about reforming what he saw as punitive by-laws against fast food restaurants (and frisbee throwing in the town).

The position paid $200 a month; he took a 2 year break from acting to serve.

1973 Pablo Picaso, Artist, is Dead

Picaso died of a heart attack at his chateau near Cannes on the French Riviera.

A year earlier, to mark his 90th birthday, Picaso had a major retrospective of his work at the Louvre Museum - this had never been done before for a living artist.
