Dr Martin Luther King Jr Is
Assassinated | It
happened a few minutes after 6pm while Dr
Martin Luther King Jr
stood on the balcony outside his second-story room at the Motel Lorraine in Memphis,
Tennessee. He
was only 39 years old. James
Earl Ray was the prime suspect for the murder. The rifle, a Remington .30-06,
was found near the scene, eyewitness reports and fingerprint evidence all pointed
to Ray as the assassin. Ray
was eventually arrested in Britain on June 8th at Heathrow Airport. Ray was extradited
back to the USA and there he pled guilty to avoid execution. He was sentenced
to 99 years in jail. But
his conviction has been widely criticized. Ray claims he was part of a conspiracy
and fled after realizing he was the patsy. Even King's relatives have spoken out
in Ray's defense. Ray
died in 1998. |
