Fahrenheit 911
Short plot summary

This documentary investigates the George W Bush presidency and argues that it used the 911 attacks to increase fear at home so that it could pursue a pre-planned strategy of imposing American power abroad for the benefit of American business interests, including those of the Bush family and friends.

What our panel of critics thought

"I have never spat such volumes at a movie before, but once I started I had to empty my whole mouth, twice! I have never felt more angry in my life. However, I decided not to say anything unless they arrested me under the Patriot Act."

"Michael Moore: I don't agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it. How about a documentary on obesity next?"

"I had a few funny sumo jokes ready for my review but, to be honest, I think this movie has made me lose my sense of humor."

"Uhm... fatty.. fatty fat man... four eyes fatty beardy sumo man... Booo! Ooohhh... You are sooo fat!"

"Great documentary, shame it's not on a less depressing subject. How about one with nice cute and cuddly animals next time Michael?"

"Nice movie soundtrack, shame about the face."

"I would like that 'burn mother fucker burn' tune for my next wedding."

"They used napalm in Iraq? That's orange juice mixed with gasoline isn't it? Sorry, I've mislaid my internet terrorist book."

Please tell me the ending or plot overview if necessary

This is a compellingly argued movie. At the end of the day, however, it probably comes down to a matter of trust in Bush himself as to how you react.

If you trust Bush then you probably will say that he couldn't possibly have been this bad (ask Britney Spears and millions of others) if you don't trust him then he most likely did do it all and then some.

He's back and one can't wait for his Oscar winning speech again this year. I am told that the academy are to allow the throwing of muffins and other small baked goods this time - Never fear our chubby hero can eat his way out of anything!

This is an important movie in an election year in the USA. It sets the anti-Bush, corporate American benefits of attacking Iraq, agenda. It will provide confirmation to those who dislike Bush, but will likely be ignored by those who like Bush including those who are making millions out of the war.

Michael Moore went to extraordinary lengths to get this movie in front of as many electors as possible before the 2004 Bush vs John Kerry presidential contest, but ultimately to no avail. George Bush won a second term.

Michael Moore is an important leader in getting the documentary form back on the media agenda in the USA. Long may he continue.

Quotable quotes (real)

"I need my son."

"All of us at the networks made a mistake."

"We never read legislation that we pass."

"If it wasn't for the oil nobody would be there."

1) We don't understand how Fox calling the election for Bush made all the other Networks change their minds - even if it was a Bush supporter in Fox News making the decision.

2) Movie fact: 42% of the time in the 8 months up to 9/11 George Bush was on vacation. Besides the fact that if you work a 9 to 5 job you are only working for 33% of the time, how can you possibly calculate the 42% figure? We presume this 42% is the time Bush was away from Washington, but you can take meetings and discuss things, sometimes an informal setting is good for that kind of thing, especially for formulating policies. One of the examples of Bush being on vacation is shown as him walking in Camp David with Tony Blair where they were discussing the Iraq war.

Please give me the facts that made your veins in your head pop the most.

FBI were not allowed to question the bin Laden family following the attacks. The Saudis blocked attempts to interview the 911 hijackers family's.

George W Bush's company, Arburton, was financed by 'Saudi money'. James R Bath, a friend of GW Bush, acted as a money man for the bin Laden's, he provided finance for GW Bush's companies.

$1.4bn paid by the Saudis to the Bush family and friends, against the $400,000 a year for being president - who would have your real loyalty?

HW Bush takes CIA briefings (which all past presidents are entitled to) which he allegedly uses for his business interests.

28 pages of the 9/11 report were censored by Bush - did these implicate the Saudi's?

Airport security: A woman with her baby was told not to bring on board breast milk, but passengers were allowed to take limited amounts of matches and lighters on board.

8 armed troops on duty one night in Oregon - Homeland security not really much of a priority then...

There are more police in Manhattan than the 11,000 troops in Afghanistan.

Other comments

A must watch movie and the great thing is it's being released at the time, and not a couple of years after Bush leaves power. Realistically we wouldn't expect you to be watching this movie if you are a Republican. If you are a Democrat you probably knew all of this already, but it gives you a nice one-stop reference for arguments with doubters. For floating voters it is probably required viewing.

Michael Moore continues to be the most important voice of dissent in the USA today.
