Butch girl Calamity Jane (Doris Day) wants, firstly, boy, Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin (Philip Carey), but then falls for Wild Bill Hickok (Howard Keel). She teams up with Katie Brown (played by Allyn Ann McLerie) to make her more feminine so she can get the second man she fancies.

Calamity sends Katie Brown out of town when it is discovered that she is falling for Calamity's fancy bit, Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin...

But Calamity is not a hard hearted gal underneath those spores, no sir-EE, she rides out to brung her back and they all marry happily ever after. Calamity marries Hickok, Brown marries Gilmarten.
