Now
that Watergate informer Deep Throat has finally been named (Mark Felt was number
2 in the FBI) we ask: will we ever discover the true identity of the following
secret reporter informers?
Bad
Breath
1974:
Missouri reporters Gary Baldyware and Mary Woodslap (known collectively as Baldyslap)
uncovered a complicated scandal in which dentists in the state would drill out
and then sell old gold and silver fillings and replace them with cheaper alternatives.
Informer Bad Breath was instrumental in helping to trace where the precious
metal went. Speculation suggests that Bad Breath was a disgruntled member
of the gang whose job it was to remove the smell of Halitosis and sick from the
metal swag.
The
Donut
The Donut informer provided details in what the tabloid press named the
'Chubby Hubby Dunka' scandals of 1975-6. Reporters Fred Fromage and Harry Frais,
working at the Delaware Awarer, discovered that drug companies were secretly
lacing sweet pastries and breads with a new super-sweet sugar to see how fat they
could make people get.
Big
Checked Baggy Pants
Big
Checked Baggy Pants broke the mold for informant names in the 1970's as it
did away with the usual two name form. BCBP helped uncover evidence of
a golf ball tampering scandal of 1974 where criminal gangs attempted to fit golf
balls with a radio controlled device (the ball could then be driven along the
ground at critical times).
The
Elephant and The Giraffe
Both
helped reporter team Bob Over and Jack Out (the original Over and Out) investigating
a wildlife poaching scandal in Southern Africa in 1975.
The
Hunch-Back
All
informants are given this name by reporters in the Notre Dame area.
